Exercises:

A. Change the sentences below into passive.

- English Passive Sentence using Modal Auxiliary

The pattern of English passive sentence using modal Auxiliaries is as follows:

S + MODAL + BE + VIII (Past Participle)

Modal Auxiliaries: can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, would rather, had better

Look at The examples below:

1. a. + (Active) She will send a letter.
---- + (Passive) A letter will be sent by her.

b. - (Active) She will not send a letter.
---- - (Passive) A letter will not be sent by her.

c. ? (Active) will she send a letter ?
---- ? (Passive) will a letter be sent by her ?

2. (active) She must do this homework.
-- (Passive) This homework must be done by her.

3. (Active) John can open this door.
-- (Passive) This door can be opened by John.

- Passive Sentence (Present Perfect Tense)




The pattern of the passive sentence of present perfect tense is as follows:

S + HAVE/HAS + BEEN + VIII (Past Participle)

Look at the examples below:

1. (active) The people have studied English and French.
-- (passive) English and french have been studied by my sister.

2. (active) She has written a letter.
-- (passive) A letter has been written by her.

3. (active) Someone has broken my window.
-- (passive) My window has been broken by someone.

From the examples above, we know that to make passive sentences from active ones is changing the object of the active sentences to the subject of the passive sentences. The subject of the active sentence is changed to a prepositional phrase using the preposition by. The verb of the active sentence HAS/have + VIII is changed to HAS/HAVE + BEEN + VIII (present participle).

- English Passive Sentence (Past Tense)




The English passive sentence of past tense is made by using the to be (was or were) and past participle (VIII). The pattern is as follows.

PATTERN : S + was/were + VIII (PAST PARTICIPLE) +(by ....)

When the passive sentence is derived from the active one, the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence, and the subject of the active sentence is changed to be a prepositional phrase using the preposition by and it is palced in the final position of the sentence.

The following examples are the English passive sentences of past tense derived from the active sentences.

1a. + (Active) : My father wrote a report.
--- + (Passive) : A report was written by my father.

1b. - (active) : My father did not write a report.
--- - (Passive) : A report was not written by my father.

1c. ? (Active) : Did my father write a report?
--- ? (Passive) : Was a report written by my father?


2. (Active ) : The people broke the building.
---(Passive) : The building was broken by the people.

3. (Active) : Robert taught English.
---(Passive) : English was taught by Robert.

- English Passive Sentence (Present Continuous Tense)




The English passive sentence of present continuous tense is made by adding the to be (am, is or are) and the word being before past participle (VIII). The pattern is as follows.

PATTERN : S + AM/IS/ARE/ + BEING + VIII (PAST PARTICIPLE) +(by ....)

When the passive sentence is derived from the active one, the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence, and the subject of the active sentence is changed to be a prepositional phrase using the preposition by and it is palced in the final position of the sentence.

The folowing examples are the English passive sentences of present continuos tense derived from the active sentences.

1. (Active) : My father is writing a report.
---(Passive) : A report is being written by my father.

2. (Active ) : The people are breaking the building.
---(Passive) : The building is being broken by the people.

3. (Active) : Robert is teaching English.
---(Passive) : English is being taught by Robert.
